The Importance of Being a Scientist free essay sample

What are you going to do for a living when you grow up? Most people don’t know. They either have a list of about fifteen things they want to do or don’t have even one idea. I certainly don’t know what I want to do when I grow up, but I do know this: getting a college degree is becoming more and more important. It is necessary for any career mobility, as well as being a prerequisite for many entry-level jobs. As young people today are pushed more and more into the workforce to seek high-paying jobs and acclaim in their companies, we need to enter STEM fields. STEM refers to programs and careers relating to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM fields are some of the fastest-growing and most lucrative careers available. They provide personal career advancement, as well as societal advancement and discovery. Economically, they help provide a good retirement and a future for our children, individually and as a whole. We will write a custom essay sample on The Importance of Being a Scientist or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page STEM careers keep our economy going and our society improving. With the super-aging of the world’s population, whereby the number of retirees is greatly increasing compared to the working population, governmental retirement benefits are going to be significantly cut. Because of this reduction in retirement benefits, our generation are going to have to work longer and retire later, if at all (Hicken) (Harvey). In order to retire you need to have fairly significant savings. Having a high-paying STEM career that provides career advancement and many benefits will greatly assist in being able to retire comfortably. The importance of STEM degrees can be numerically identified. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, sixteen of the twenty occupations with the highest projected growth through 2022 are STEM related: thirteen relating to health and the other three to engineering and computing (â€Å"Fastest Growing Occupations†).Of the top twenty highest paying jobs, eighteen are STEM careers (â€Å"Highest Paying Occupation†). The College Board says that seven of the top ten fastest growing industries, projected through 2018, are STEM-related (â€Å"Industries with the Fastest†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ). STEM covers an incredibly diverse range of occupations. Anything from biology to physics, applied mathematics to healthcare, engineering to IT (information technology). One of these fields that is in great need of more people is neurology. It is the study of the brain, its processes, and ways to improve and heal the mind. There are nearly infinite subsets of neurology. Neurotechnology is one of the most fascinating. It involves developing new methods of treatment for various diseases and disorders, researching the structures of the brain with various imaging technologies, and working on ways to enhance brain function. You can study Alzheimer’s and other diseases that affect memory; you can study ways to improve concentration and memory; you can study split-brain patients; you can study emotional disorders such as bipolar disorder and depression; you can study artificial intelligence and the recording of thoughts and memories; you can study nearly anything (Kaku). The need for workers in the computer programming and IT (information technologies) fields is decreasing. At the beginning of the computer age, these were two of the fastest-growing and highest-paying careers available. Now, as technology has advanced so rapidly and so well, the need for people expert only in computers is diminishing. At this point, it is a much better career choice to get a degree in some engineering discipline that gives you the skills required for engineering and IT, as well as a wide range of other jobs. Having this wide range of skills and flexibility makes it much easier to find, and keep, a good job, as well as allowing you to have options if you want to move cities or even switch careers completely. Engineering is one of the best degrees to get. A degree in almost any engineering discipline can be applied to any of a massive number of fields. Even if you don’t choose a career in engineering, an engineering degree has great weight in the business world. An engineering degree signifies a certain way of thinking and problem-solving: it signifies a clear, logical, organized, and creative thought process. You can also enter research science. Research scientists work on the developments and discoveries that engineers implement. Research scientists are responsible for discovering new particles and elements, finding new species, and showing what planets might be home to intelligent life. A research scientist’s job, first and foremost, is to learn and discover new things. They typically work in academia or for large companies or organizations that require discoveries, such as pharmaceutical and agricultural businesses or governments. They are responsible for the basis of space programs, environmental protection initiatives, archaeological findings, the development of important theories such as relativity, and discoveries like the God Particle. Many research scientists work as professors at colleges and universities, or at organizations like CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), which are dedicated to discoveries and learning. Other fields that are always open are aeronautical and aerospace careers. These fields involve the development, testing, improvement, and use of vehicles that move through the air: both in the atmosphere and out of it. Aerospace careers don’t just involve engineering. You can work as a technician, flight simulator, computer programmer, manager, flight control, or any number of other things. There are even some aerospace careers that are art and design based (Dunbar). With the continued push for exploration and discovery elsewhere in the universe, governments and organizations such as Space-X are always looking for people to design, test, operate, and organize new craft. Fields in the arts and humanities are in significantly less demand. While many people would like to enter these fields and be successful, very few manage to do so. It is incredibly difficult to make a good living in the arts. Unless you are going to become an educator, job options are usually very limited. In order to be successful, you rely on opinion and advertising, two very fickle allies. You have to be incredibly talented, have good publicity, and possess a lot of luck in order to be successful. Most people in the arts have to spend years working other jobs, particularly in the service industry, before they can make a living in the arts. Many never are able to do so. While artistic ventures may let you be self-employed and/or work your own hours, they are rarely lucrative. The creative freedom and self-expression are definitely pros of working in the arts, as well as fame if you do particularly well, but are terribly difficult to achieve. You can be hugely talented and not be ab le to make a living. You almost always have to know someone, be lucky enough to get a great internship or get discovered by a well-known, rich, or powerful person. The importance of STEM degrees and careers is greater than just personal advancement. These jobs provide vital discoveries, knowledge, and products for society. All advances in technology, health, consumer products, and practically everything else we need or want come from people with a STEM-focused education. Unless you know precisely what you want to do with your life, and it’s likely you don’t, it’s a good idea to get a degree that can be used across multiple careers so you have options down the road. There’s nothing wrong with having a degree in mechanical engineering and working as a commission sculptor in SoHo, or having a degree in fine arts and working as a mechanical engineer. However, one is significantly more challenging than the other. One guess as to which is which. It’s always better to overshoot your career with your degree than it is to fall short.

Edward Gein Essays - Human Trophy Collecting, Free Essays

Edward Gein Essays - Human Trophy Collecting, Free Essays Edward Gein All through history there have been stories of death and killing. There have been many murders in America. Some killers have had odd practices that they inflict on their victims; however, few have gone to the extent of Edward Gein. Because of his obsession with women and odd practices committed on the bodies of his victims, Edward Gein is considered to be the most bizarre murderer in America's history. Ed Gein was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin on August 21, 1906 (Woods 8). His father later moved the family to Plainfield, Wisconsin (Woods 9). Gein had one brother named Henry (Woods 6). Their father was an alcoholic and their mother was a strict believer in God and doing the right thing. Their mother impressed on them the importance of marriage before sex. In 1940, Ed's father died. Even though he was thirty-four, Gein was still living on the farm with his mother and brother (Woods 22). In 1944, Henry Gein asked Ed to help him do some controlled burning on a marsh on the family's property. Ed had taken care of his part of the burning and went looking for his brother, but could not find him. Ed organized a search party, but they found nothing. On his way back to the house, Ed found Henry laying on a brush pile, dead. Ed attributed the death to heart attack or smoke inhalation, and the idea of an accident was accepted by all. No autopsy was performed. Some people believe that this may have been the beginning of Ed's killing spree(Woods 23). The next year, 1945, Ed's mother suffered a stroke. Ed says it was because of the way his neighbors constantly argued and how much it upset his mother. Ed was in charge of taking care of his mother. He took care of her for a period at the farm but could not handle it and was forced to put her into a hospital. Soon after, she had a second stoke and died (Woods 34). This left Ed alone. He began reading books about the female anatomy and became very interested in adventure stories involving head hunter and cannibals. At one point, a well-meaning person brought him back two shrunken heads from the Philippines. Ed found them very interesting and showed them off to many people in the community. As time went on he also became interested in the preservation of the human body after death and read books on the subject (Gollmar 74). In 1947, Ed began robbing graves in three local cemeteries. Sometimes he would take the whole body and sometimes just parts. His favorite part was usually the head of the dead person (Gollmar 58). He would cut it from the body in the cemetery and take it back to his house. When there, he would make a death mask. He would remove the skin from the bone and stuff the skin with tissue paper and saw dust. When the police searched his house, they found approximately ten of these masks scattered around the home of Ed Gein (Portrait of a Killer 40). In 1954, Ed committed the first murder he admits to. Mary Hogan, the owner and operator of a local tavern was killed. She was shot and her head was possibly cut off at the scene. At the scene, the police found a large pool of blood but no drag marks. Therefore Mary Hogan had been carried from the bar. After Gein had been caught, the police realized he was too small too carry the large stature of Mary Hogan from the scene and believed he may have had an accomplice for this murder and the grave robbings, but Gein constantly denied this (Gollmar 89). Ed Gein had few close friends. However, after he was caught a man who was believed to be Gein's best friend became violently mentally ill and was committed to a mental hospital. He died in the hospital a short time later. The police think he may have been Gein's accomplice in the murder of Mary Hogan (Gollmar 45). Ed Gein's final victim was a local shop owner named Bernice Worden. The killing took place on November 16, 1957. It was

Assignment Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Assignment - Case Study Example Third, the company has not been keen in defending the interests of the female employees who occasionally experience sexual harassments. Such acts are perpetrated by the company’s top officials that the company values due to their performance and hence does little about such cases. The company has received several complaints from female employees regarding sexual harassments but failed to act since such behaviors are â€Å"acceptable† in some of the countries that the company functions. Nelson would have taken strict measures with regard to the unethical happenings. With regard to child labor, the company should have inspected the subsidiary company to make it clear that child labor is not tolerated. Nelson should also have ensured that the company takes care of all employees’ interests regardless of the country. Here, the company would have provided the most appropriate working solvent and take all complaints seriously. Moreover, Nelson would have also made it cl ear to all employees regardless of their positions that sexual harassments are not entertained and would be penalized. With regard to formulation of a code of ethics, Nelson should ensure that all of the reported unethical issues are addressed in the code. Such issues include rules governing child labor, employees’ health, and issues regarding sexual harassments and similar behaviors in the organization’s subsidiary companies. This would ensure that the company has a predefined culture, which takes care of all individuals’ interest. With respect to suggestions, I would suggest a code that caters for the interests of the main stakeholders and improve the reputation of the company in the face of the public and the customers. The code would also deter unethical behaviors in the

Year-Round Education Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Year-Round Education - Research Paper Example It is important to know the difference between this modified calendar and traditional system to compare the benefits and drawbacks of this development. Unlike the traditional system where a multiple month vacation (mostly in summer) is given to students, year round schools offer a cumulative holidays of about 2 months distributed over the year. These year round schools can further offer single track, multi track or extended year format. When this new system was introduced in the mid 80s, a lot of controversies erupted that highlighted concerns over certain issues. In order to analyze and compare these two systems it is mandatory to dissect those issues. Traditional system had served its purpose well for a very long time. Now if it was to change it could have some positive or negative effect on the individuals associated with it, most importantly, the students and the teachers (Haser & Ilham 2005). So while comparing these two systems focus should be on observing any change in their a ttitude. For example, a student from a year round school system can be disturbed looking at the kids of his age enjoying their long summer vacations. Other factors that are important to consider are effect on academic performance, cost and changing a norm of a society. Year round Education and Academic Achievement: Various researches have been conducted around the world to compare the two education calendars. Lindsay-Brown, 2010, investigated and compared the impact of year round school calendar and traditional school calendar on the academic achievements in North Central South Carolina. In this study, 256 elementary students from four different schools, each pair following different calendars, were tested using the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT). English language arts and mathematics were the subjects tested in the study. After all the fine adjustments were done to the obtained data, the result showed that there was no significant difference in the academic achievements when students from year round schools versus traditional schools were compared. Another review paper of 39 studies (Cooper et al 2003) also indicated a weak and insignificant effect of modified school calendar on academic achievement. Most of the think tanks that are in the favor of this modified calendar place their arguments on the basis of superior academic achievements. These results, however, is in direct contradiction to their theory. Some groups such as â€Å"Summer Matters† believe that traditional school system is best for the students and society. The argument is based on philosophy of family ties and relationships. They believe that long summer breaks allow families to come together and cherish the moments with their children. This social support catalyzes children efforts and stimulates them to perform better in the field of education. Moreover, they insist that summer vacations provide an excellent opportunity for kids to learn and discover new things. Why Year round Education Calendar? So if year round education does not help students to excel in their academics, then why this system has gained popularity over the years? Parents, faculty and administrator weigh certain other factors as well such as growing school enrollments, working parents and shrinking budget (Sheilds & Stevens, 2000). These problems are partially solved by introducing this education calendar. For example, multi-track year round schooling divides students into groups and rotates them in an organized manner. This multi tracking can increase the capacity of school by 30%. Therefore, the total number of students accommodated in 4 traditional schoo

Throughout the poem, he shows his concern about how time is running out between the two of them by the use of convincing and persuasive words. I the first two line of the poem, â€Å"Had we but world enough and time, This coyness, Lady were no crime† ,He says this to explain to the mistress that if they did have time, he wouldn’t care about her shyness and by the use of words like â€Å"had† and â€Å"enough† show clearly that they do not have time. In the next two lines, â€Å"We should sit down and think which way to walk, and pass our long love’s day† which is related to the first two sentences explains that they would sit down and think where to walk to and have a nice day if they had time. â€Å"Thou by the Indians Ganges’ side Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide of Humber would complain†. He tells her this to show his love to her to mean that if they were far apart, he would complain. â€Å"I would love you ten years before the flood: And you should, if you please, refuse till the conversion of the Jews† is said by the persona probably to show her how long he has loved her and that they will have a never ending love. There is a bit of lust and obsession. He also uses the word â€Å"gaze† to show her that he would never be tired of looking at her body and he also relates it to time.

Michael Moore Sicko

1.Michael Moore’s movie Sicko is so controversial because it makes people think. He went to Cuba and showed it, not as this horrible place that we’ve all be told but as a caring country willing to help our citizens. This movie proving that Universal Healthcare works in other countries makes people wonder why it has to be so difficult to have it here. The Unites States is suppose to be the most powerful country and yet so many Americans feel powerless when it comes to healthcare. 2.Some pros for Universal Healthcare are everyone would be covered. People would be healthier and live longer. Our poverty rate wouldn’t be as high because people wouldn’t be losing their homes because of medical bills. It would make businesses more productive because they wouldn’t have to carry insurance. Some cons for Universal healthcare are higher taxes. There is a longer wait for surgeries. All the people that work for the insurance companies would lose their jobs. 3.Some relative changes in healthcare because of the Universal Healthcare Bill are not having to wait or being denied because of a pre-existing condition. You will no longer have a higher rate because of your health status. Insurance companies wouldn’t be able to cancel your policy due to an adverse health condition. Children will be covered under their parents insurance policies until they are 27. New plans must cover check ups and preventative care with out co-pays. 4.Most Americans are concerned about the new law requiring almost everyone to have insurance. A lot of people simply can’t afford it although the new law is suppose to make it more affordable. Another concern is wait time to see a doctor. With more people seeing doctors there will be a longer wait time to get in and the less time the doctor has to spend with you in the room.
